This work is part of ongoing investigations into the grotesque and ritual. As an aesthetic category its border lies between the acceptable and the abject. My motivation draws from grotesque representations in medieval painting and my hand movements inspired by hand gesturing used in classical opera. I work with sound artists Michael Hodson presenting this experimental work made for a small audience.
A trail of perfumed incense smoke partly directed my gestures, as did the sound created live by Michael Hodson, who was responding with immediacy to my hand movements. Eventually it became indistinguishable what or who was directing the performance action. I was able to create a work that created a simple synergy between smell, sound, smoke and performance.
