In Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport, I sing the song by Rolf Harris whilst painting a map of Australia using red paint before nailing an impaled animal, a small stuffed kangaroo, next to the canvas. The canvas was in a state of tension across a corner. Like an animal hide it becomes a screen onto which a bloody backdrop is scrawled. The reference to Viennese Actionist artist Herman Nitsch’s Blood Organ work is a direct reference.

The performance is a pale interpretation of another version I had only envisioned. I had anticipated using a canvas double the size and using real blood on the severed head of a real kangaroo drawn from a large black plastic garbage bag. The performance was invested with similar symbolic investments but the visceral reaction from the audience was certainly scaled back. There was difficulty in obtaining a kangaroo head in time.
