I was invited to participate in an exhibition exploring sado-masochistic themes and ideas of self discipline. I found a pair of rubber boots in a second hand shop and used them to explore ideas of rubber fetish using photography and giving each print a provocative name. I was also exploring my relationship to condoms, sometimes called “rubbers’ which was a personal form of self discipline given the age of HIV and AIDS I was living in. Condom free sex was promoted as taboo and ‘safe sex’ encouraged by agencies looking to curb HIV transmissions.
The work gave me a chance to explore digital imaging and the intersection of high quality cotton paper had with photostatic technology. Basically these works are colour photocopy prints, riding the tension between high and low art.
